Nineteenth-century Russian seminary journals and other primary source materials were reviewed in an effort to document and evaluate the level of interest in the writings of Augustine of Hippo (354--430),during the imperial Russian period. This investigation examined three broad areas of Russian history: the eighteenth century,when Augustine's works were imported with other Western classics as part of Russia's Enlightenment； the nineteenth century,when educational reform was a major topic and Augustine's works were used to enliven clerical training； and the "Silver Age" of Russian culture,when Augustine's works became part of a religious revival opposed to Marxist materalism. A generally high level of interest in Augustine's writings was discovered,and his work was received favorably in all of the time periods examined. This investigation has brought to light a neglected aspect of Russian religious history,that of Augustinian studies. In a wider context,this examination shows that Russian theological study was deep and broad,and that it sought knowledge of major theologians from the Western tradition for the sake of preserving and developing Orthodox theology.
