Paul Hanly Furfey (1896-1992) holds an important place in the history of American Catholic social thought because he bridged the gap between scientific social reform and social reform based on gospel radicalism. Furfey received his scientific training from scholars who were at the forefront of their respective disciplines: John A. Ryan (economics), William Kerby (sociology), and Thomas Verner Moore (psychology). Later, he was introduced to gospel radicalism by the witness of Dorothy Day's Catholic Worker movement. Throughout his life, Furfey labored to bring these two approaches together in order to promote a culture based on Christian principles.;Furfey operated in a number of different contexts in order to achieve his goal. As head of the sociology department at The Catholic University of America (CUA) from 1934 to 1963, he commanded a wide audience and influenced many people through his broad correspondence; his voluminous publications; numerous lectures; and spiritual guidance. He conducted empirical studies and wrote several books on theory and method in sociology. He contributed to numerous journals both scholarly and popular. He also translated his thought into action by sponsoring and actively engaging in Catholic settlement houses in Washington, DC. In popular writings and through his sermons and retreats, Furfey often promoted Catholic extremism in order to compel people to lead holier Christian lives: committed to the poor, the outcast, and world peace.;The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a comprehensive study and appraisal of Furfey's life and thought with a particular focus on his distinctively Catholic approach to the treatment of social problems. It makes use of much previously unexamined material from the Paul Hanly Furfey/Mary Elizabeth Walsh papers at The American Catholic History Research Center and University Archives at CUA. Other archives have been consulted as well in order to round out and confirm the data derived from the Furfey/Walsh papers. Secondary source material has been used to place Furfey's spiritual and intellectual development within the cultural and religious context of his time. This dissertation makes a unique contribution as the first in-depth scholarly analysis that concentrates upon Furfey's life and thought alone.
