The political and economic changes experienced by Viet Nam over the past twenty years have had major repercussions on the territorial and social levels. Ho Chi Minh City is a perfect example of the stakes currently involved in this development. If,to some extent,this South Vietnamese metropolis represents the main centre of national economic growth,it also contains the seeds of urban problems,one of which is the accelerated expansion of precarious housing. Like elsewhere,under the umbrella of housing conditions improvement and environmental sanitation,a large number of evictions have been conducted in HCMC. Resettlement actions have been undertaken since 1990,to show an effort of the city authorities in order to due with negative effects of the involuntary displacement. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods,our study aims to analyze the factors that determine the choice of resettlement alternatives of people affected by the Tâ;n Hó;a - Lò; Gô;´;m canal sanitation and urban upgrading project. In our view,this choice reflects not only the policy impact but also the adjustment ability of the inhabitants to find out the most suitable housing solution within their financial possibilities. The research results show that economic factors seem to play a determining role in the choice,since the cost of new house,the possibility to organize economic activities,access to State funding are often discussed by interviewees. Finally,the land transformation process and a multiplicity of situations help to explain the difficulty of HCMC authorities to elaborate a fully adapted resettlement policy.
