Tai Chi (TC) is gaining popularity among seniors in North America, yet research on this martial art is focused on risk factor management, leaving health enhancement aspects and reasons for valuing this activity virtually unexplored. This thesis details a phenomenological study exploring motivating factors TC for initiation and continuation, lived experience of TC,and perceived outcomes of TC practise among eight older adult TC practitioners. Seeing TC in action was a compelling factor in initiating TC practise. Enjoyment, perceived health and social benefits, and seeing TC as challenging motivate continued practise. Respondents reported concentrating deeply and experiencing a sensation of detachment during TC practise. They voiced that TC benefits them mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Findings regarding the experience of TC among older adult practitioners in the current study appear to link TC practise to Csikszentmihalyi's flow theory.
