Nonverbal behavior makes up a large portion of communication and can have a significant affect on how we form impressions of others. In the courtroom, impressions of witnesses and defendants can greatly influence jurors' perceptions and thus may potentially have an impact on their subsequent verdicts. There was less attention paid to the impact that an attorney's impression can have on the outcome of a case. This study aimed to address this point and examine the effects of attorneys' nonverbal behavior on jurors' perceptions of their credibility and subsequent ratings of guilt. An actor played the role of a defense attorney and his nonverbal behavior was experimentally manipulated in a stimulus video so that participants observed either positive or negative behavior. Ratings of credibility and verdicts were compared across conditions. The results did not show significant differences in the group and produced very small effect sizes. Further research should be done to explore the impressions that each specific behavior conveys as well as elaborating on the current methodology.
