This study assesses the parental component of the Los Angeles County Sherriff Departments Vital Interventions and Directional Alternatives VIDA) 16-week program in the greater Los Angeles area. VIDA is a low-cost intervention program where the participants are at risk youth who are introduced to the program either by way of their parents) or caregivers. Referrals to the program may come a variety of sources school, church, VIDA staff, etc.) and in some cases the referral is court-mandated as a way to avoid a criminal juvenile record before age 18. This program evaluation utilizes qualitative methods and findings from the surveys completed by the parents or caregivers, program participants, curriculum documents and interviews with VIDA law enforcement professionals at 3 locations. The purpose of this study is to determine the most effective parenting style needed in order for VIDA parents or caregivers to successfully reinforce positive behaviors in their children. Assessments from the VIDA parents or caregivers, program participants and the volunteering law enforcement professionals embodied in this study provide valuable information for program quality community based interventions for parents or caregivers go through high levels of conflict. Although the viewpoints of VIDA parents or caregivers will seek to identify a particular effective parenting style that reinforces positive behaviors in at risk youth, further research is recommended.
