The presented work consists of a study of the most significant aspects of the registry of ships in Spain. The examination of this question presents a great complexity due to the legal dispositions applicable and to the own characteristics of the Spanish system of registry of ships. In addition, the matter has not been object of a detailed and exhaustive examination. The doctoral thesis begins with an introductive chapter of historical type and continues (second chapter) with a legal analysis of the concept of ship like registry object, considering the rules in force of Commercial Registry Regulations (1956), Royal Decree about Flagging, Registration and Maritime Registry (1989) and, finally, State Ports and Merchant Shipping Act (1992). In the chapter third, the norms are examined that serve to identify the ship like registry object (name, IMO's number, address and nationality). The obtaining of the Spanish flag requires an administrative authorization and this has required to examine the procedures to provide Spanish flag provisionally and granting the Spanish flag to ships under construction and ships registered in foreign registries. Finally (chapter fourth), the thesis takes care of some foreign registries (Italy, France and United Kingdom), although the nucleus of this chapter deals with the Spanish system of ship registration. This last one is basically a system of double registry. Of a part, the ships, vessels and other naval devices must be registered in an administrative registry that is under the authority of the Ministerio de Fomento. This registry has public functions and is organized in a central level (Registro maritimo central) and peripheral (Registros de matricula). It is completed in addition with a second registry located in the Canary Islands (Registro especial de buques y empresas navieras de Canarias). On the other hand, the ships that hoist Spanish pavilion must be registered in the section first of so-called Registro de Bienes Muebles, which concerns the property and other rights and duties that affect the ship.
