Studies have shown that existing residents neighbourhood identity is shaped by physical form elements such as landmarks and paths. Previous studies and development models have shown that neighbourhood participation has the potential to generate an innovative city design model. An on-line questionnaire administered to residents of Little Portugal,Toronto asked them to rate the value of investigator-selected physical form elements that may contribute to atypical residents neighbourhood identity. A descriptive statistical analysis of 44 resident responses was conducted, and results suggest that there are site-specific physical form elements that residents value. Results also suggest that residents desire the opportunity to be involved in neighbourhood design. This study provides information that landscape urbanists, planners and developers can use in neighbourhood design.
