A natural gas pipeline exploded in a residential neighborhood in Western United States. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of resilience in the aftermath of this disaster. Traditionally, disaster literature has focused on the negative impacts of disasters, emphasizing distress and psychopathology. Researchers have more recently begun to explore protective factors that reduce psychopathology. However, few studies have directly examined resilience in this context. The study, guided by a Community-Based Participatory Research design, employed a two phase mixed methods design with phase 1 encompassing a quantitative survey completed by 146 participants to test a model of resilience and qualitative open questions to explore disaster impacts and coping. Phase 2 was comprised of nine individual follow-up interviews to better understand the individual experiences of the disaster. The path model examined coping styles seeking support, positive reappraisal, and problem-solving) as pathways to resilience and the indirect effects of coping and resilience on resource loss and psychological distress. Path results found seeking support and positive reappraisal positively predicted resilience. In addition an indirect path was found from resource loss to psychological distress through seeking support and positive reappraisal and resilience. Qualitative themes and domains that emerged from the open-ended questions and interviews included: Reactions,Methods of Resilience,Impacts,Gains, and Existing Needs. Reactions focused on immediate evacuation responses following the explosion. Methods of Resilience centered on coping behaviors used to overcome the disaster such as,turning to faith, seeking professional assistance, and perseverance. Impacts consisted of negative consequences that resulted because of the disaster, such as anxiety, isolation, and depression. Gains were described as unexpected positive outcomes, such as strengthened relationships. Existing needs highlighted areas that were needed to help foster resilience, which included desires for more opportunities to connect and socialize with their neighbors. These research findings highlight that resilience can emerge even after immense tragedy. Results provide guidance in developing resilience-based disaster responses to improve post-disaster outcomes. Key recommendations include: normalizing experiences, develop routines, building support, promoting positivity, highlight strengths, foster empowerment, attend to spirituality, and providing frequent and easy access to therapy.
