The current growth in the number and percentage of older adults in the United States is unparalleled in our nations history. By 2050,the diversity of U.S. older adults will have changed even more significantly with a population including 58% Whites,20% Hispanics,8.5% Asians,and 11.2% Blacks. As this diverse population continues to grow,encounters between healthcare providers and patients of different cultures will be more common. The purpose of this capstone project was to examine how cultural differences impact decision making in end-of-life care and the obstacles healthcare professionals face in delivering quality care to patients at such a susceptible time in their lives. Scholarly search engines were utilized to compile the data with specific key search terms. This capstone project utilized a literature review as the primary source of data collection. The literature was examined and highlighted ethical concepts of patient autonomy,truth telling,attitude toward advance directives,and the challenges healthcare provider face at delivering end-of-life quality care. Qualitative principles were utilized during the data collection and analysis process. Results shown common barriers healthcare professionals face with family members when providing care at the end-of-life to Hispanic and Asian communities. Findings also suggested similarities between the Hispanic and African-American groups when it comes to trust in the healthcare system and the use of life-saving support. These findings outlined the significance of awareness and understanding to cultural group beliefs and practices a healthcare provider must have in order to deliver end-of-life quality care.
