Expert systems are computer programs that manipulate knowledge in a set of rules to solve problems efficiently and effectively within a specific problem area. Typically an expert system requires a domain that is narrow, discrete, and homogeneous. Urban design problems are semi-structured and calls for judgement and creativity at each phase. This makes urban design domain unsuitable for the application of expert system techniques. However, the research to be presented is based on the fundamental assumption that the requirement of discreetness for expert systems applicability is sometimes applied too rigorously, and hypothesizes that the domain of urban design is amenable to development of expert systems. The research uses the designing of an urban space,e.g.,a plaza,as a typical problem solving situation in urban design. The research has two parts. First,it develops a framework of the urban design process for the plaza. This framework allows one to explore the information structure related with the design process of a plaza utilizing a visual environment. This framework includes: a) an overview of the concept of a space; b) rules and facts associated with the respective design stages of a plaza; c) visual examples associated with the rules and facts. Second,a set of forty rules related with quality of space and provision of activities in a plaza are used to evaluate the design of a space. It determines the conformity of a design to the given design standards and to a given design approach. In summary, this research has developed a prototype not of a fully automated urban design process, but a post-design tool for technical evaluation that integrates computer aided design, computer imaging, and expert system concepts. It uses AutoCAD as a design aid; Concept,a Micro-Vector product,to implement the imaging component and the design framework; and AutoLISP for implementing the expert system concepts. It looks at the building of an expert system more through the eyes of an urban designer than those of a computer scientist.
