The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has become increasingly prevalent in the past decade. One of the challenges mental health professionals continue to face is the need to consider and incorporate cultural factors when developing treatment programs for culturally diverse individuals. Most of the current evidence-based traditional interventions for ASD are not culturally effective for Asian clients; as a result, many are inappropriately served or have led to the underutilization of mental health services. Moreover, the Asian American population has encountered many treatment barriers, including stigma associated with psychotherapies and language limitation when it comes to mental health treatment. This dissertation, therefore, focused on exploring the potential of biofeedback as an alternative treatment to specifically help Asian American clients who suffer from ASD. Given its effectiveness in treating anxiety, attention, and mood disorders which are also comorbid symptoms found with ASD, biofeedback has shown much promise in treating symptoms associated with ASD. In addition, the fact that it is physiologically-oriented can help reduce the stigma associated with traditional mental health treatments. Through a critical review of the literature, the thesis discusses the efficacy of biofeedback, ASD treatment, and Asian American mental health issues. Given the minimal research and empirical data directly suggesting the connection among the three factors, six qualitative interviews were conducted with clinical field experts, as the researcher sought to fill the gaps in the literature and obtain practice-based evidence to suggest possible efficacy of biofeedback treatment on ASD with Asian American clients. Although this treatment approach needs to be further validated by future research and clinical data, the dissertation serves to increase public awareness on understanding the limitations of current interventions especially from a cultural perspective to highlight the need for more culturally-responsive resources. The thesis presents a discussion of relevant research as well as the clinical perspectives expert field consultants to explore the value of biofeedback treatment for Asian American ASD clients. Clinical implications, suggestions for future research, limitations, and constraints are also addressed.
