Intersection Collision Warning ICW) is a system that alerts drivers of potential dangerous traffic situations when they approach an intersection. It does so by providing reliable and timely warnings to other vehicles that are approaching the intersection and therefore prevents collisions. Early results showed that collision warning systems could significantly reduce crash fatality and property damage. We note that when multiple vehicles are approaching an intersection at about the same time, it could help avoid potential collisions if the drivers know the information of all the vehicles in the vicinity, including locations, velocity, and moving directions. According to ComScores study, in 2011 over 64.2 million people in the United States owned smart-phones, and this number is growing rapidly. Taking advantage of the sensing, computation, and communication functionality of smart phones, we devise an innovative and affordable intersection collision warning system ICWS). It uses smart-phones to form a dynamic ad hoc wireless network and exchanges information among drivers. Based on the location, moving direction and velocity in the information, the system estimates the time a potential collision would occur and warns the drivers to avoid the collision. We carry out extensive performance evaluation of the system. In addition, we examine two communication methods for exchange safety-relative information for the proposed ICWS. In beacon based communication, we active the smartphone in access point mode and put critical information in the pre-configured service set identified SSID) field for information exchange. In Wi-Fi Direct based communication, we put the critical information in the device name and update the information simply by changing the device name. We are also aiming at developing smartphone applications for easy use.
