Through this paper, two case studies are conducted to evaluate whether electric transportation could become an attractive alternative for reducing CO2 in transportation sector. In China EV case,an optimization model is developed,to quantify the best environmental potential of EVs,and to seek a sustainable level of EV market penetration under its State Power Plans in 2015 and 2020. It is found that under existing power generation pattern,EVs do not reduce CO2 emission compared to conventional vehicles. Even if all available clean energy could be used to support EVs,a sustainable level of EV market share should not exceed 15% by 2015 and 80% by 2020. In the American E-bike case,27 E-bikers are interviewed in the Sacramento-Davis area. It is found that there are four benefits unique to the riding of E-bikes: Speed,Acceleration,Green, and Enabling (enable people with certain disabilities or symptoms of aging to begin or continue bicycling). The barriers to the expansion of E-bike ridership are Cost,Heavy weight,Infrastructure, and Policy (E-bikes are prohibited to use Class I Bicycle Path). However, those barriers can be overcome with moderate level government and business interventions. As a result, electric transportation can be introduced as an environmental friendly alternative transportation method for both studies.
