This study intended to extend research about stress and intimate partner violence (IPV). Several models were used to examine gender and romantic relationship types in associated roles, assessing the contributions of insecure adult attachment styles and masculine norms adherence as mediators. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the validity of the model. Subjects consisted of 106 male and 129 female adults, including 52 Gay men and 55 Lesbian women. Each participant was administered a survey composed of a demographics questionnaire, screening form, Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory, the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales, the Family Inventory of Life Events and Changes, the Revised Relationship Scales Questionnaire, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Testing was by retrospective self-report completed online over the course of a multi-month data collection period. Scores were compared between genders and romantic relationship types on stress and IPV using analysis of variance tests with minimal differences. The mediation model and full model for stress and IPV variables with insecure attachment as the mediator were tested for significance of difference between the nested pathways, achieving a significant result indicating the full model fit the data better than the mediation model. The mediation model and full model for stress and IPV variables with adherence to masculine norms as the mediator were tested for significance of difference between the nested pathways, again with a significant result indicating the full model fit the data best. The comparison of the results of this replication to the original study by Craft, Serovich, McKenry, and Lim (2008) revealed no large, significant differences among the two samples. However, the mediation model using insecure attachment did not replicate the Craft et al. study, instead finding stress to be the strongest predictor. Similarly, adherence to masculine norms was not found to be a significant mediator. It is important that research on this topic achieve a larger sample derived from a culturally diverse yet clearly defined geographic population. Following the participants of such a study over a period of time could prove important to understanding the etiology and outcomes of couples IPV.
