Automatic peritoneal dialysis is an increasingly used form of renal replacement therapy. A review of the literature and guidelines of the various scientific societies allows the indications and advantages of this modality to be inferred. Among the factors and subproceses that could contribute to a more favorable clinical course in patients are control of the infection rate, preservation of peritoneal membrane and residual renal function, adequate volume and sodium control, use of more biocompatible solutions, and their combined use, etc. Knowledge of these subprocesses allows the combination of multiple possibilities in the individualization of treatment, which translates into clinical benefits. Achieving the aims established in each of these subprocesses will help to allow both 鈥渢he quality standards of the technique鈥?to be maintained and the final aim of treatment to be achieved: improved patient survival, which would confirm that automatic peritoneal dialysis is a safe option.
