The study of forefoot problems has been made easier with the technique of axial projection of the metatarsal heads, particularly in their weight-bearing projection.
To obtain the diagnostic images we have a high bench and radio-transparent slings available which hold the foot in the required position.
The resulting radiographic projection enables the metatarsal heads to be seen which, together with the clinical picture and other diagnostic parameters, helps us to assess the possible problems.
It is also worthwhile making a comparison while in the non-weight-bearing position to reinforce the diagnosis.
The ease of executing this projection gives a boost to the study of metatarsalgia.
