摘要

Introduction

It has been shown that the control of vascular risk factors and early activation of the 鈥渟troke code鈥?are essential in the prevention and treatment of this disease, and decrease mortality and morbidity rates.

Objectives

To present our experience in the development of an acute stroke health education program so that: a) the patient and family acquire knowledge on what is a stroke, the alarm signs, the immediate action, the risk factors, and the prevention measures; and b) to promote patient and family participation in self-care to achieve the best possible level of independence.

Methodology

A description of experience in the development of an acute stroke health education program, in which individualised education is given (near-patient) as well as group education (1 hour per week).

Results

A total of 165 patients were admitted to the stroke unit in a 6 month period from 25th February to 26th August 2010. The families or patients of 78 (47.27%) of those admitted took part in group sessions, with 138 attendances. In the 117 questionnaires filled in before the education were obtained, a notable lack of knowledge was observed, which improved significantly in the questionnaire after the sessions. A total of 110 participants (94.02%of the questionnaires) stated that they know what stroke is, and 117 of those questioned mentioned that the educational sessions had clarified many or a lot of doubts about the disease.

Conclusions

The development of a health education program has demonstrated it efficacy in increasing patient and family knowledge about the disease. The group sessions improved professional-patient-family communication, which contributed to achieving an increase in the level of satisfaction of the care received.
