To review epidemiological studies on the association between maternal employment and type of occupation and neonatal prematurity and low birth weight.
We performed a literature search in the Medline and EMBASE databases. The articles selected were classified according to a protocol that included the study鈥檚 characteristics鈥? maternal employment, type of occupation, and reproductive outcome.
Twenty-one articles were included. Most of these articles found no differences in neonatal prematurity or low birth weight between working women and housewives. A higher risk of prematurity and low birth weight was found in women working in manual occupations and the service sector.
The evidence found suggests the need to protect working women during pregnancy, especially those working in the two above- mentioned sectors.
