The objective of our study was to evaluate the DNA fragmentation in patients who consult for infertility and voluntary donors, and see if there is any correspondence between the various seminal parameters and DNA damage.
We analyzed the DNA fragmentation of 212 seminal samples from patients who were subjected to in vitro fertilization cycles, comparing the various alterations concentration, motility and morphology of individual and their combinations.
More than 50%of patients who had a single alteration as concentration and motility showed fragmented DNA. In cases showing only altered morphology only 11%showed fragmentation.
The data presented in this study prove a clear link between the seminal quality and sperm DNA fragmentation in relation to the concentration and mobility. On the other hand we did not find a relationship between high DNA damage and sperm morphology.
We consider important to make this additional test to all patients with any parameters altered to select the best protocol in a reproductive cycle.
