A new azido derivative of tridentate S
chiff
base
copper(II)
complex has
been synthesized and
chara
cterized. X-ray single
crystal stru
cture analysis reveals that the
complex [Cu
b>2b>L
b>2b>(N
b>3b>)
b>2b>(NO
b>3b>)
b>2b>] (
1),
containing 1-(
N-pyridylimino)-3-aminopropane (L) as
co-ligand, is a dimer in whi
ch
copper(II) ions are
bridged
by two azido groups in end-on fashion. The
coordination environment around
copper(II) is distorted o
ctahedral whi
ch is rarely o
bserved among these types of azido
bridged
copper(II) dimers. Three among the four
coordination sites of the
basal plane of the o
ctahedron are o
ccupied
by the nitrogen atoms of the S
chiff
base and the fourth site is o
ccupied
by a nitrogen atom of a
bc;
b>2b>-1,1
bridging azido ligand. While one of the api
cal
coordination is provided
by a nitrogen atom of an end-on
bridging azido ion from a symmetry related [CuL(N
b>3b>)(NO
b>3b>)] unit to give rise the dinu
clear moiety, [Cu
b>2b>L
b>2b>(N
b>3b>)
b>2b>(NO
b>3b>)
b>2b>], the remaining site of the o
ctahedron is o
ccupied
by an oxygen atom of the
coordinated
ion. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements evidenced an antiferromagnetic interactions, in [Cub>2b>Lb>2b>(Nb>3b>)b>2b>(NOb>3b>)b>2b>] (1).
