To examine the clinical characteristics, diagnostic modalities, and appropriate treatment of a case of pneumococcal pyosalpinx managed in the Hospital of M茅rida, Spain.
A woman complained of abdominal pain, especially in the hypogastrium, nausea, vomiting and fever. The patient was an intrauterine device (IUD) carrier.
The patient underwent surgery due to the presence of purulent abscesses in both tubes. Bilateral salpingectomy was performed. Streptococcus pneumoniae was identified as the cause of the infection and cefotaxime was prescribed.
Because of its lack of specificity and low frequency in the population, pneumococcal pyosalpinx is difficult to diagnose. However, early recognition, by analyzing microbiological samples, is important to prevent mortality and morbidity.
