We compare i

ns Xe(50 AMeV) +S
n, rece
ntly measured by the INDRA collaboratio
n, with the Qua
ntum Molecular Dy
namics (QMD) model i
n order to ide
ntify the reactio
n mecha
nism which leads to multifragme
ntatio
n. We fi
nd that QMD describes most of the data quite well, i
n the projectile/target regio
n as well as i
n the midrapidity zo
ne where also statistical models ca
n be a
nd have bee
n employed. The agreeme
nt betwee
n QMD a
nd data allows us to use this dy
namical model to i
nvestigate the reactio
n i
n detail. We arrive at the followi
ng observatio
ns: (a) the i
n-medium
nucleo
n-
nucleo
n cross sectio
n is
not sig
nifica
ntly differe
nt from the free cross sectio
n, (b) eve
n the ce
ntral collisio
ns have a bi
nary character, (c) most of the fragme
nts are produced i
n the ce
ntral collisio
ns, (d) the simulatio
ns as well as the data show a stro
ng attractive i
n-pla
ne flow resembli
ng deep i
nelastic collisio
ns, a
nd (e) at midrapidity the results from QMD a
nd those from statistical model calculatio
ns agree for almost all of the observables with the exceptio
n of
d2σ/
dZ dE. This re
nders it difficult to extract the reactio
n mecha
nism from midrapidity fragme
nts o
nly. Accordi
ng to the simulatio
ns the reactio
n shows a very early formatio
n of fragme
nts, eve
n i
n ce
ntral collisio
ns, which pass through the reactio
n zo
ne without bei
ng destroyed. The fi
nal tra
nsverse mome
ntum of the fragme
nts is very close to the i
nitial o
ne a
nd due to the Fermi motio
n. A heati
ng up of the systems is
not observed a
nd he
nce a thermal origi
n of the spectra ca
nnot be co
nfirmed. The disagreeme
nt betwee
n the simulatio
ns a
nd the data for some observables is presumably due to a force ra
nge which is too large as compared to reality but
necessary to keep the
nuclei stable i
n these semiclassical approach. nt>
