Fracture Tests for Ceramics under Mode-I, Mode-II and Mixed-Mode Loading

In the theoretical part of this paper a wide data base of stress intensity factors is presented for three types of tests appropriate for mixed-node investigations on ceramic materials. In the experimental part the test methods are applied to determine the failure behaviour of Al2O3 under mixed-mode loading. In particular, the influence of the starter crack, modelled by a narrow saw-cut and a pre-crack is illustrated.
