The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency and characteristics of hospitalizations due to herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) in the Community of Madrid and to study the use of resources and the costs associated with hospital treatment of the disease.
We carried out a retrospective study using information from patients admitted to hospitals in the Community of Madrid with a discharge diagnosis of HZ and/ or PHN from the national hospital data surveillance system (Minimum Data Set). Additional information was collected from the medical records of patients hospitalized at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Madrid with HZ and/or NPH between 1998 and 2003.
Between 1998 and 2003 there were 3,085 admissions related to HZ and/or NPH in hospitals of the Community of Madrid, representing an annual hospitalization rate of 10.0 per 100,000 (95%CI, 9.6鈥?0.3). The rate increased with age, reaching 86.2 per 100,000 in people aged > 85 years.
HZ and/or NPH was the main discharge diagnosis in 22%of the cases. The mean cost of admission in these patients was estimated at euros 3,520.
Of the cases admitted to the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, 62%were classified as moderate and 5.4%as severe. Pain was the most frequently reported symptom (84%of cases), 23%of patients had 鈮?1 complications and 66%presented a diagnosis corresponding to risk factors prior to the episode. Oral or intravenous antivirals were the most-frequently administered treatment.
HZ is a heavy burden on the healthcare system and has a significant economic and social cost especially in the elderly.
