Functional activity of vaccine induced antibodies to pneumococcal polysaccharides: Evaluation by opsonophagocytosis and protection against pneumonia and bacteremia in mice
Host protection against pneumococcal infection is mainly mediated by phagocytosis following opsonization by antibodies to the capsular polysaccharides and complement. In order to evaluate the protective capacity of vaccine induced antibodies against pneumococci opsonophagocytosis in vitro has been useful. The development of infection models has been hampered by the fact that pneumococcal serotypes pathogenic in humans are often not virulent in mice.
