Gallstones in infants and children. Characterisation by age, aetiology and outcome.

Cholelithiasis is recognising with increasing frequency in infancy and childhood. It is often associated with congenital abnormality of the biliary tree, systemic infection in newborns, prolonged total parenteral nutrition, overnutrition, haemolytic disease, organ transplantation, sometimes without any known predisposing factors. This report is presenting a 9 years experience from 1988 to 1997. Seventy tree cases of cholelithiasis in patients aged 4 days to 20 years are reviewed.
