摘要

Introduction

The low number of international studies to establish sex from first cervical vertebra motivated this research. The results, in our opinion, are a significant contribution to the process of forensic identification of bodies.

Material and methods

Eight dimensions were evaluated, first cervical vertebrae removed from 178 bodies of Colombian adults, both male and female, autopsied at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Bogot谩, Colombia. Four discriminant functions were generated to predict sex with 94.2%, 87.6%, 87.1%and 86.5%confidence, respectively. To calibrate the taking of the measurements, the experimental design looked at inter-observer error in order to standardise the taking of the measurements and the effectiveness of the discriminant formulas. To do this, three examiners proceeded to create a standard process for making accurate measurements. The four functions obtained were then applied to 10%of the samples examined.

Results

The results obtained by the examiners showed 80鈥?7%of correct assignment of sex to the percentage of the samples examined.

Conclusions

The generated formulas are versatile, since two of them require the presence of only 2 and 3 dimensions, respectively, allowing their possible application in those cases where the bone is incomplete or affected by taphonomic damages.
