摘要
Demographic aging is a relatively recent phenomenon which appeared at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries and propagated throughout the world disrupting population age structures. This mutation arose initially from a massive reduction in fecunditywhich reduced the number of children and consequently increased the proportion of elderly persons in the population. Mortality then entered the picture and after first favoring younger populations became a factor favoring older populations because people died later and later in life. The effects of this evolution are examined here, particularly the fact that death occurs almost exclusively among “old” people. Unfortunately, this “privileged” situation rapidly becomes an inconvenience by marginalizing older people and accentuation segregation by age. Collective reappropriation of death and a vigorous response to individual aging will be necessary to meet the challenge of population aging and benefit from the remarkable possibilities of an era of geritude.
