The comorbidity between Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) has generated a special interest as recent publications suggest and self-medication hypothesis has been postulated to explain it. This research tries to evaluate the relationship between those nosologic entities in patients who assist for SUD's treatment.
Cross-sectional study, with descriptive and analytic aspects. The sample was 249 patients obtained by consecutive sampling in an Outpatient SUD's Unit.
The 28.9%of patients had a probable ADHD. Although ADHD were not related to cocaine's or other stimulants鈥?addiction, heroine's addiction predicted more risk of ADHD (OR: 1.12-2.15).
The relationship between ADHD and SUD can鈥檛 be explained only by self-medication hypothesis. Other common ethiological factors should be considered, as psycho-social ones.
