Summary
The use of cotton pesticides in Togo dates back to 1974聽with the creation of the Togolese Cotton Society (Sotoco). Over a period of 10聽years, 116聽cases of pesticides poisoning were registered in the health services of the prefecture of Sotouboua (Togo). The objective was, for the initial study 2003, to list the pesticides used by the cotton producers, in view to estimate the impact on their health and the prevention practices, and to verify, after a given period, the evolution of their behaviour. A higher prevalence of the dermatological (29.2%in 2003聽and 62.0%in 2008) and neurological signs (32.0%in 2003聽and 57.7%in 2008) and an emergence of the digestive signs (26.1%in 2008聽against 3.1%in 2003) in relation with the conditions of work and life of the cotton producers were revealed. Indeed, an increase in the use of organochlorines (34.1%in 2003聽and 57.5%in 2008) to the detriment of organophosphates and pyreethroids (54.1%in 2003聽and 10.0%in 2008) was noted, as well as modifications of behaviour with regard to the good personal and environmental hygiene measures (respectively 83.8%and 34.4%in 2003聽against 47.5%and 19.7%in 2008). It is essential that development partners and health actors become aware of the consequences of the use of pesticides.
