During the three school years 2008/09 - 2010/11 3090 school sports injuries in all 106 secondary modern schools (Hauptschule) in Tyrol (Austria) were reported to the general accident department (Allgemeine Unfallversicherungsanstalt [AUVA]). 49%of the injuries (n = 1526) occurred while playing ball sports, most notably while playing basketball (19%; n = 295), football (15%; n = 232) and volleyball (12%; n = 197). Injuries to the upper extremity are dominant in basketball, volleyball and handball, while most injuries suffered while playing football were clearly localized in the lower extremity. Coordinative deficits as well as excessive demand and inadequate levels of basic skills seem to be the causes of the injuries.
