In her novel Oryx and Crake,Margaret Atwood shows great concern for the deplorable loss of language accompanied by the fall of humanity. Through the juxtaposition of the fall of humanity and the deprivation of language,Atwood stresses the significance of language for humanity. Language is not only a tool for communication, but also the soul of the humanities, arts, history and religion. It is in fact a fundamental component of humanity. Through this cautionary tale,Atwood admonishes us against the danger of prioritizing the development of technology and the perfection of rationality at the cost of artistic expression of mankind through the medium of language. Excessive stress on the external material world of humanity can only result in the total deprivation of humanity.
