Chinese landscape painting, consisting of pictures and poems, belongs to a typical multimodal discourse which includes visual and verbal modes. However, the application of multimodal discourse analysis to Chinese landscape painting is still rarely seen. Considering that, this paper conducts a multimodal discourse analysis of Ma Yuan's landscape painting Ta Ge Tu from the perspective of social semiotics based on the Kress & van Leeuwen's visual grammar and Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar which aims to provide readers with a new perspective to understand and appreciate Chinese landscape painting and improve their multiliteracy.
