西南地区的中国画创作在时代的激流中不断发展、变革,传承创新,熔铸当代,传承中华美学特质,展现中华审美风范,历经几代同仁的不断辛勤耕耘和努力探索,人才辈出,成就卓越,已经成为现当代中国画艺术发展历程中的重要力量。西南中国画创作以艺术院校为中坚力量,美协、画院和中国画学会三足鼎立,在当代艺术语境下致力传统艺术的创造性转化、创新性发展,扎根西南,面向全国,走向世界,涌现了一大批贴近时代、贴近生活、具有时代特征的艺术作品,形成了西南自身的学术追求和独特的艺术面貌,极大地影响和推动了当代中国画创作的进程。
