Boris Eifman has successfully adapted Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov into a ballet, reproducing almost all the conflicts in the ballet and giving the ballet a strong dramatic appeal. The Brothers Karamazov shows the habits of Boris Eifman as a choregrapher: placing the various fictional characters into abstract and simplified parent-child and brother relationships, and pointing to a philosophical question: how can the original sin be redeemed?Boris Eifman focused on the father(Karamazov) and his sons(the eldest son Demetri, the second son Ivan and the youngest son Alexei), who are the core characters in the most dramatic conflicts. Surprisingly, in a twoact ballet, Boris Eifman not only fully presented the conflicts, but also gave the opportunity to contemplate on a hidden issue concerning human nature. The question concerning redemption is seamlessly embedded in a perfect and convincing narrative.Boris Eifman's ballets are well known for expressing strong emotions through simple narratives, leading the audience to reflect on human nature. In this ballet, the issues of human nature include: how selfish desires erode the relationship between father and sons, how hostility swallows up kinship, and how the credulity of law harms innocent people. In the final conflict, the ballet focused on Alexei and the "beast" inside him which roared and rushed out of the "moral cage," highlighting the crazy genes of the Karamazov family. Boris Eifman skillfully used a cross as the symbol of Alexei's faith, and with a big noise the cross fell from the roof, symbolizing the collapse of Alexei's faith that he had tried to defend through quarrels with his brothers.Boris Eifman's The Brothers Karamazov raises a number of thought-provoking questions, especially about the antagonism between belief and disbelief. Through the conflicts between the father and his sons, the ballet reveals the Western conception: humans are born with sin. Then, how can humans redeem their sin? Karamazov said, "Lust cannot be redeemed." Demetri said, "Jealousy cannot be redeemed." Ivan said, "Violence is not redeemable." Boris Eifman wants to tell the audience that the answer rests in the heart of the audience. They are supposed to feel it themselves.
