As the UHVDC transmission technology becoming widely used, the phenomenon of "strong DC and Weak AC" is increasingly apparent.Reducing of AC power grid short-circuit capacity, impact resistance of power grid reactive power and voltage stability problem is increasingly outstanding. This has a great effect on the steady operation of the converter, increasing the chance of commutation failure. For the characteristics of the phase modifier, such as dynamic reactive compenstion and improving the short circuit capacity of system, new requirements are put forword for the application of the phase modifier by State Grid Corporation of China. In this paper, the principle of reactive power adjustment, the control function strategy, the superiority of reactive power transmission and voltage stability of the dynamo condenser in the converter station are reviewed. And the defects of the dynamo condenser are pointed out,so as to improve the research process in the later period.
