Objective To compare the clinical features and topiramate(TPM) efficacy of temporal lobe epilepsy(TLE)with and without febrile seizures(FS). Methods The clinical data were collected, including age, gender, history of epilepsy, history of febrile seizures, electroencephalograms, brain magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),dose of TPM and treatment response in 41 patients with TLE. The clinical characteristics, effective rate, retention rate and side effect of TPM were compared in TLE with and without FS. Results No difference was found in sex ratio, age, onset age, birth abnormality between the two groups, but the incidences of familial histories of epilepsy were different. There were no significant differences between TLE with FS group and without FS group in the ratios of TPM effectiveness, the ratios of one year seizure-free, the incidences of adverse event of TPM, three-month retention rate, six-month retention rate and one-year retention rate. Conclusion The association between TLE and FS still need researching. Topiramate is a relative safe and effective drug to treat TLE.
