A long-term operation monitoring on the formation of biofilm and operation in up-flow and down-flow activated carbon filters was studied for two advanced treatment plants in Z City. The results show that methylene blue adsorption and iodine adsorption of carbon was decayed seriously after 5 years. At present, the stable biofilm has been formed in the carbon filters, and the removal rate of COD_(Mn), NH_3-N and UV_(254) is stable. In the condition of raw water quality presently, the effluent quality can reach the standard, the replacement of activated carbon can not be considered temporarily. But in the follow operation process, we should pay close attention to the effluent quality and biological leakage, and determine replacement time of activated carbon.
