Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii are the two pathogenic species in genus Listeria. These pathogenic species can multiply in cytoplasm and be used as vaccine vehicles for vaccines construction. However, there are distinct differences on their host range, virulence and other aspects, leading to different applications in the field of vaccinology and immunology. On the perspective of molecular biology, the distinct pathogenic features are associated with the differences of their respective major virulence factors and related genes. Comparing the virulence factors and related genes between the two bacteria strains is very necessary for the application in vaccinology. In this article, proteomic and genomic research advances on Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii virulence factors are reviewed.
