Inflammatory microenvironment is closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors.Recent studies have found that there is a phenomenon of neutrophil infiltration,i.e.tumor-associated neutrophils(TANs).Further studies have suggested that TANs is not only involved in the occurrence and sustainment of tumor inflammatory microenvironment, but is also extensively participating in tumor pathological process.Various kinds of proteases TANs synthesizes and secretes have been affirmed strongly related to tumor proliferation, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis.Among different kinds of neutrophil-derived proteases, neutrophil elastase takes part in the process of proliferation; cathepsins are highly relevant to tumor invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis; matrix metalloproteinases regulate the metastasis and angiogenesis of tumor.Studies about the TANs and neutrophil-derived proteases have provided new insights into the pathological mechanisms of tumor. In addition, targeting the neutrophil-derived proteases to control and restrain the progress of tumor cells may play a key role in interfering with tumorigenesis and development.
