Objective To investigate the expression of forkhead box protein F1(FOXF1) in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma(SACC) and its clinical significance. Methods Ninety three patients with primary SACC who underwent surgical resection were retrospectively enrolled, and the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients were analyzed. The expression of FOXF1 in SACC tissues was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining. The relationship between the expression of FOXF1 in SACC tissues and clinicopathological features, influencing factors of recurrence and disease-free survival was analyzed. Results The positive expression rate of FOXF1 in SACC tissues was 46.2%(43/93), the positive expression rate in SACC patients with the large parotid gland was significantly higher than that in patients with small parotid gland(P <0.05). The positive expression rate of FOXF1 in patients with T_1-T_3 stage was significantly higher than that in patients with T_4 stage(P <0.05). The expression of FOXF1 was not correlated with sex, age, distant metastasis, nerve invasion, lymph node metastasis and histological types(P >0.05). Age and expression of FOXF1 were independent influencing factors for recurrence in SACC patients(P <0.05). The 5-year disease-free survival rate of patients with positive FOXF1 expression was higher than that of patients with negative FOXF1 expression(81.2% vs 50.9%, P<0.05). Conclusion FOXF1 may play a role as a tumor suppressor in the occurrence and development of SACC, and may be a favorable prognostic indicator for SACC.
