国民性批判是墨白小说中的一个重要主题。墨白对国民性的批判是在真实生活经历的触动和文人性格品质的影响之下进行的,其小说中的国民性批判主要分为对深重奴性的批判、对看客心理的批判、对畏强欺弱性的批判、对贪鄙性格的批判和对封闭守旧性的批判五个方面。墨白对国民性的探索和批判,体现了他作为当代文人的责任感,显示出独特的社会价值和艺术魅力。
