The thermal stability of the Cr-Mo-V hot-working die steel with 0.4% and 0.5% carbon content was analyzed by using Jmat-Pro software, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and energy spectrometer, and the effect of carbon content on thermal stability of steel was expounded. The results showed that with the increase of carbon content, more M6 C and M23 C6 carbides were generated, and the hardness decreased more rapidly at the initial holding stage. The number and size of carbides increased significantly, which led to poor thermal stability.
