In modern swine production, the confined environment brings convenience to husbandry but decreases the maternal expression of the sows. The mechanism of maternal behavior was elucidated from the aspects of the central nervous control, gene expression, and hormone regulation; the negative effect of environmental stress on thematernal behavior, physiology, and psychology was analyzed, and the common diseases of confined sows which led to a decrease in sows' maternality were summarized in this review. By analyzing the influencing factors of maternal expression in confined environment and exploring thematernality mechanism of sows, it would help improve the breeding and management.
