Objective To identify the status and hot research areas of sex education abroad by bibliometric analysis and provide some references for research development in our country. Methods We retrieved in PubMed for literature concerning sex education from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2017, and used BICOM to conduct bibliometric analysis. The gCLUTO 1.0 software was applied to conduct two-way cluster analysis to find research status and hotpots. Results A total of 2 630 pieces of literature was collected, and there were 22 main subject terms. The two-way cluster analysis was conducted with detection of five hot spots in studies of sex education, including parents' involvement in sex education, adolescent sexual health status, methods of sex education, prevention and control of HIV and sexual transmitted disease and health services of sex education. Conclusion The most popular topics in research concerning sex education from 2008 to 2017 are parents involvement, adolescent's sexual health, methods of sex education, HIV prevention and health services.
