Objective: To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Positive and Negative AffectScale(PANAS) in women with breast cancer. Methods: 505 women with breast cancer were tested by Chinese version of thePositive and Negative Affect Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of Positive Affect Scale and Negative Affect Scale were 0.937 and 0.919 respectively; the test-retest reliability of the PA and NA were 0.508 and 0.481 respectively; the inter-item correlation coefficient of the PA and NA were 0.595 and 0.539 respectively. The correlation coefficient between the PA and NA was- 0.674. The results of exploratory factoranalysis: Varimax- rotated factor loading for the PA terms ranged from 0.635 to 0.831, NA terms ranged from 0.556 to0.779. The correlation coefficients between PA and HAMA/HAMD were-0.578 and-0.264 respectively; The correlationcoefficients between NA and HAMA/HAMD were 0.723 and 0.330 respectively. The scores of the two factors of PANASwere significantly different between the urban area and the rural area(P<0.001), the scores of the two factors of PANAS weresignificantly different among the age groups(P<0.05), only the scores of PA were significantly different among the educational degree groups(P<0.001). Conclusion: The reliability and validity of the Positive and Negative Affect Scale are acceptable, and the scale can effectively detect the breast cancer patients' positive and negative affect.
