In order to examine the effect of family environment on adolescents' Internet addiction and if this effect was moderated by gender, a large scale survey was conducted in present study. With the adoption of Internet Addiction Decisional Balance Questionnaire and Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire, 4,500 adolescents from 10 provinces and regions were investigated in this survey, of which 1209 data were matched by data from parents. The results revealed that, 1) Parents' Internet decisional balance significantly negatively predicted adolescents' degree of addiction to Internet(β=-.303, p=.002), such that when parents held positively toward Internet's influence on their children, adolescents would get higher scores on Internet addiction; 2) Male adolescents scored significantly higher than female(β=.062, p=.041); 3) An interaction between parents' Internet decisional balance and gender emerged, β =.087, t(1, 1085)=2.135, p =.033, η~2=.004. Simple slope analysis revealed that for male adolescents, parents' Internet decisional balance could significantly negatively predict their online addiction, β=.161, t(1, 463) =3.499, p=.001, whereas for female adolescents, parents' Internet decisional balance could not significantly predict their online addiction, β=.045, t(1, 622) =1.123, p=.262. To conclude, parents, as the major custody outside school, have direct control over adolescents' time and frequency of online surfing, and thereby can display an impact on their children's addiction to Internet. Moreover, this effect would be moderated by gender, specifically, this effect would be effective for male adolescents but not for female. Therefore, in terms of intervention, gender differences should be considered as well. For male adolescents, family supervision and regulation may prove to be necessary and efficient, whereas for female, more effective methods for intervention should be further examined.
