Since ancient times, there has been two competing opinions among philosophers on what is well-being and how to achieve well-being: hedonic and eudaimonic approach. Hedonic well-being refers to maximum pleasure and minimum pain, whereas eudaimonic well-being focuses on meaning, self-potential and personal-growth. Although there is a blossoming interesting in examining their distinctions, few of studies investigate how hedonic well-being and eudaimonic well-being was reflected in brain. Using the resting-state fMRI, we investigated the associations between the functional connectivity of the default mode network(DMN) and hedonic and eudaimonic well-being during rest. 144 young and healthy participants underwent a resting state scan and their hedonic and eudaimonic well-being were assessed. Group independent component analysis revealed functional connectivity of the DMN network. Multiple regression analysis with hedonic well-being, eudaimonic well-being, and the functional connecitity of the DMN were carried out, respectively. The behavior results found there was a medium correlation between hedonic well-being and eudaimonic well-being. The neuroimaging results found the functional connectivity of medial prefrontal cortex with anterior DMN was both negatively correlated with hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. Furthermore, the functional connectivity of the insula with anterior DMN was positively related to eudaimonic well-being, whereas that of orbitofrontal cortex was positively related to hedonic well-being. In addition, we also found the functional connectivity of middle cingulate gyrus and precuneus with DMN was negatively correlated with hedonic well-being. Our finding suggested that the neural patterns may reflect hedonic and eudaimonic well-being characteristics, and provided insights into our comprehension of neural correlates of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being.
