Antimicrobial peptides are found in every complex species, existing in organisms from insects to plants to mammals and non-mammalian vertebrates. This paper expatiates the concept, characteristics and varied biological function of antimicrobial peptides, and introduces its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory mechanisms. The author also elaborates on scientific research and therapeutics trends of antimicrobial peptides.
